The 15 "NL" (Nonlinear Labs) banks are the primary part of the C15 factory library. They are named after instrument and sound categories to make it easier to find a preset with a certain sound. The NL banks will be expanded and updated over time. Containing a fine selection of quintessential and instrument-defining sounds, they will give you a good starting point to explore the sound and capabilities of the C15.
The Piano bank contains a variety of electric and synthetic piano sounds. In here you will find well-crafted presets that resemble the sounds of familiar electric pianos. You will also find that the C15 is capable of producing a whole spectrum of expressive, artificial piano sounds.
The Plucked bank is the pool for all the sounds that resemble instruments where strings are plucked. Clavinets, zithers and harps, guitars as well as basses can be found in here. Many of the presets are using the comb filter, where it behaves like a plucked string when it’s excited by a short burst.
This bank contains a selection of percussive idiophone sounds. Think wood and stone marimbas, xylophones, crystal bowls, steel drums and other similar instruments. These presets oftentimes use the comb filter to generate their sound, which gives them their resonant and bell-like quality.
The Hybrid bank contains sounds that won’t really fit in either of our other banks. This is because the timbres and characteristics of the hybrid sounds show qualities from two or more categories at the same time, thus making this bank the most diverse of the NL banks. In many cases, the timbre of the sounds may be morphed through the macro controls.
Here we have an assortment of various electric, synthetic and other organ-like sounds. Unlike real organs, many of the sounds in this bank are velocity sensitive and their pitches are bendable too, which gives you more room for expression.
This is a timbrally diverse bank, whose presets are only unified by the fact that they are saturated, overdriven, distorted, or fuzzy. So you will find overdriven Rhodes and Clavinets as well as amped-up guitars in here.
This is a bank dedicated to synthetic lead-, solo- and bass-sounds. It contains a mixture of timbraly varying, synthetic sounding presets that are bright and punchy and therefore work well as lead-instruments.
This bank covers a wide spectrum of woodwind instruments, from flutes and reed instruments to bagpipes and everything in between. The extensive range of different timbres, from artificial to rather realistic, is generally achieved through complex phase modulation and feedback.
The ‘Brass’ bank supplies artificial- and natural-sounding trumpet, trombone and horn instruments. Some of these sounds are more suited as solo or lead instruments, some others more for harmonic accompaniment. If you are looking for sustained bass sounds, you should definitely have a look into this bank.
This is a selection of various, rather synthetic-sounding string instruments. They share similarities with the brass and woodwind sounds, but generally have a rather nasal sound and an even softer attack/release phase. Therefore they serve well as pad sounds too.
The SynthPad sounds have a lot of similarities with the Strings, Brass or Woodwinds presets in other NL banks, but sound a lot more artificial. Most of the time, they are heavily modified by effects, which gives them a washed-out quality.
These sounds are meant to generate a certain mood or vibe. The bank consists of sounds that range from straightforward pad-like drones to experimental textures. It is hard to play melodies or harmonies with these sounds, but you can usually change their timbre by using the macro controls.
The name says it all: this bank contains all kinds of sound experiments that fall between tonal instrument and sound effect. This bank shows perfectly that the C15 is capable of much more experimentation than the other banks might suggest. The macro controls can have a very drastic effect with these sounds, so use them with caution.
In contrast to the mallets, this bank contains a wide variety of percussion sounds, often with an atonal character. If you are looking for drums, cymbals, metallic one-shots or similar percussive sounds, you will definitely find them here.
These SFX sounds are similar to the ones in the ‘Weird’ bank, except they have almost no tonal quality. In here you will rather find sound effect one-shots and other gimmicky sounds.
